SINGAPORE:As many as 15 million men across the country have been prescribed a generic version of Viagra (sildenafil) because of concerns about the safety and effectiveness of the drug.

The National Drug Safety Authority (NDA) has found that many men have been prescribed a generic version of Viagra in recent weeks. But the NDA says that some men have also been prescribed the generic equivalent, sildenafil, which is sold under the trade name Revatio.

Viagra was developed by Pfizer, the world’s largest drug maker, in 1994, and became available in the US in 1998. It was then approved for medical use in 1998.

Sildenafil, the active ingredient in Viagra, has a long history of usage in the US, including in Europe, where it was approved by the FDA in 2003.

The NDA also advises men to talk to their health care provider about the side effects that they may experience if they take sildenafil. The NDA also warns men to report any unusual or persistent side effects to the healthcare professional.

“Sildenafil is not a prescription drug and must be used under the supervision of a healthcare professional,” the NDA said in a press release. “Sildenafil should never be used in combination with nitrates or nitric oxide donors, as combining them with nitrates can result in a significant fall in blood pressure.”

However, the NDA also said that men who are taking medications for cardiovascular disease, liver disease or renal disease should consult their doctor before taking sildenafil.

“Sildenafil should not be used in combination with any of the following: antidepressants, antifungals (e.g. ketoconazole, itraconazole), antimalarials, anticonvulsants, antiseizure medications, antihypertensives, antidepressants, antiepileptics, antibiotics, or any other medications that affect blood pressure,” the NDA said.

“Sildenafil should never be used in combination with any of the following,” the NDA added:

“Men who are taking a nitrate drug for angina should not take sildenafil because the drug can cause a sudden and unsafe drop in blood pressure.”

Sildenafil has also been approved for medical use in the UK for the treatment of pulmonary arterial hypertension, a condition in which blood pressure is higher and the heart’s pumping action is reduced.

In the US, the U. S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved sildenafil for the treatment of erectile dysfunction in men under 18 years old.

The US health agency has not commented on the safety of sildenafil, but it does say that men with erectile dysfunction should have their prescription written for the drug under supervision.

“Sildenafil is not a prescription drug and must be used under the supervision of a healthcare professional,” the agency said in a press release. “Sildenafil should never be used in combination with any of the following,” the NDA added.

The NDA also says that men who have an allergy to sildenafil should avoid using it with medications for allergic reactions to nitrates. “The FDA has warned men that using sildenafil with certain nitrates for a condition that causes high blood pressure could cause a sudden and dangerous drop in blood pressure,” the NDA said.

The NDA also says that men who have taken nitrate medications for chest pain should consult their doctor before taking sildenafil. “If you have angina or chest pain and have not experienced these symptoms, stop using the drug immediately and seek medical advice immediately.”
